Larry F. Baldwin is currently NSCSS' President-elect, slated to serve as NSCSS' President in 2008.

A licensed professional consulting soil scientist, Larry is a co-founder and current Vice-President of Land Management Group Inc (LMG) in Wilmington, NC.  LMG was incorporated in 1986 to provide multiple professional consulting services regarding land, soil, wetland, coastal, hydrogeological, ecological, and environmental issues.  His company provides these services to the private and public sectors, primarily throughout the Southeast U.S. and even as far as Puerto Rico.  LMG currently employs ~30 soil, wetland, and environmental professionals.  Larry began his professional career as a NCDENR-DEH certified environmental sanitarian in Wake County, NC (1973-1975), and later was supervisor of environmental sanitarians in Brunswick County, NC (1975-1977).  He then achieved a research associate/soil scientist position with VPI & SU performing Order-2 progressive soils mapping for USDA’s National Cooperative Soil Survey in the Tidewater region of Virginia (1978-1981).  Larry was then employed by International Paper Company’s Research & Development Section as party leader/soil scientist for their land use and forestry classification mapping project covering +3 million acres within the Southeast U.S. (1981-1986).  At this time he co-founded Land Management Group, Inc.

Larry’s formal education is proudly through N.C. State University with a B.S. degree in Soil Science, B.S. degree in Forestry, and B.S. degree in Conservation.  He has a keen interest in soil/water movement relationships, and has attended multiple short courses relating to applied hydrogeology, the vadose zone, DrainMod modeling, ModFlow modeling, and drainage.  In the 1990’s Land Management Group recognized the need for an economical automated water table data recorder.  Larry helped in developing such an instrument, and to incorporate Remote Data Systems Inc, which now manufactures and markets these devices throughout the U.S. and Internationally for such uses as shallow water table studies, wetland hydrology determinations, wetland mitigation compliance, and fluctuating fluid levels within tanks or pipes.

He is a NC Licensed Soil Scientist (NCLSS #1040), ARCPACS Soil Scientist/Soil Classifier (#2183), and NC Subsurface System Operator (#SS-11946).  He holds memberships in the Soil Science Society of NC (1984), Consulting Soil Scientists of the Carolinas current director (2005), National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists current at-large director (1990), Virginia Association of Professional Soil Scientists (1978), Soil Science Society of America (1982), American Society of Agronomy (1982), American Society of Engineering in Ag-Food-Bio Sciences (1991), National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (2002), and Carolinas Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (2002).  He has an active desire to further enhance public recognition of the soil science profession, and to advance its’ role in soil standards, environmental policy, and land-use decision making.
